Lion Guard Return of the Roar

THE EPIC STORYTELLING OF DISNEY’S “THE LION KING” CONTINUES WITH “THE LION GUARD: RETURN OF THE ROAR,” A PRIMETIME TELEVISION MOVIE EVENT DEBUTING IN NOVEMBER ON DISNEY CHANNEL

Rob Lowe, Gabrielle Union, Max Charles, Atticus Shaffer and Sarah Hyland Among Voice Cast; James Earl Jones and Ernie Sabella Reprise Their Roles as Mufasa and Pumbaa, Respectively

The epic storytelling of Disney’s “The Lion King” continues with “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar,” a primetime television movie event premiering in November on Disney Channel. The movie follows Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, as he assumes the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals tasked with preserving the Pride Lands. The movie is a precursor to “The Lion Guard” television series, premiering in early 2016 on Disney Channels and Disney Junior channels around the globe. A special preview of “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar” will be presented at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, on SUNDAY, AUGUST 16 (2:00 p.m.).

James Earl Jones and Ernie Sabella reprise their roles from “The Lion King” as Mufasa and Pumbaa, respectively, alongside Rob Lowe (“The Grinder”) as Simba and Gabrielle Union (“Being Mary Jane”) as Nala. Max Charles (“The Strain”) stars as Kion. The voice cast also includes Joshua Rush (“The Adventures of Puss in Boots”) as Kion’s best friend, Bunga, a fearless honey badger; Atticus Shaffer (“The Middle”) as Ono, an intellectual egret; Diamond White (“Sofia the First”) as Fuli, a confident cheetah; and Dusan Brown (“Blaze and the Monster Machines”) as Beshte, a friendly and good-spirited hippo.

Set in the African Savanna, “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar” follows Kion as he assembles the members of the Lion Guard. While traditionally the Lion Guard has been comprised of lions known to be the fiercest, bravest, fastest, strongest and keenest of sight in the Pride Lands, Kion breaks tradition by instead calling upon some of his friends who he believes best exemplify these heroic qualities. Throughout the movie and the series, the diverse team of young animals will learn how to utilize each of their unique abilities to solve problems and accomplish tasks to maintain balance within the Circle of Life, while also introducing young viewers to the vast array of animals that populate the prodigious African landscape.

The Education and Science experts at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park serve as consultants, advising on the characteristics, behaviors and habitats of the African animal species featured and inspiring original stories based on their first hand experiences.

Ford Riley (“Special Agent Oso”) developed the movie and series and serves as executive producer. Howy Parkins (“Jake and the Never Land Pirates”) is the director. Christopher Willis (“Mickey Mouse”) is the composer, and Beau Black (“Miles from Tomorrowland”) is singer/songwriter. Author and Swahili expert Sarah Mirza is the language and cultural advisor.

Additional cast members include: Eden Riegel (“All My Children”) as Kiara, Sarah Hyland (“Modern Family”) as Tiifu, Madison Pettis as Zuri and Jeff Bennett as Zazu (both from “Jake and the Never Land Pirates”); Andrew Kishino (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars”) as Janja, Vargus Mason (“Sofia the First”) as Cheezi, Greg Ellis (“Star Wars Rebels”) as Mzingo, Khary Payton (“Teen Titans”) as Rafiki, and Kevin Schon (“The Lion King’s Timon and Pumbaa”) as Chungu and Timon. “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar” is a production of Disney Television Animation.

Elena of Avalor Season 2

ELENA OF AVALOR CONTINUES HER REIGN INTO SEASON TWO ON
DISNEY CHANNEL AND DISNEY JUNIOR

A second season of the animated series “Elena of Avalor,” a story inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore, has been greenlit into production after its notable premiere on Disney Channel and Disney Junior last month. The Princess Elena character also debuted today at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and will debut at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, in the fall. The series was created and is executive produced by Emmy Award winner Craig Gerber. For season two, story editor Silvia Cardenas Olivas will add co-producer to her role.

The announcement was made by Nancy Kanter, executive vice president, Original Programming and general manager, Disney Junior Worldwide.

Kanter said, “It’s just a few weeks into the launch of ‘Elena of Avalor’ and we are already seeing what an impact and connection she is making with kids and families. We’re eager to make sure that we will have many new stories of bravery, adventure and leadership for our audience to enjoy and are delighted to begin production on our second season and continue to find ways for her story to be heard both on and off screen.”

The July 22 simulcast premiere of “Elena of Avalor” ranks as 2016’s No. 1 series telecast among all kid-targeted TV networks (Live + 7 ratings) in Total Viewers (4.5 million), Kids 2-11 (2.4 million/6.1 rating) and Adults 18-49 (1.2 million/1.0 rating). For all telecasts to-date, “Elena of Avalor” has reached over 24 million Total Viewers, and has delivered over 8.6 million viewer engagements on the Disney Channel app and Disney Junior app.

The fable, set in an unspecified time period, incorporates influences from diverse Latin and Hispanic cultures. It introduces Elena as a brave and adventurous teenager who saves her kingdom from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen. Elena’s journey will lead her to understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders.

In addition to Elena’s debut at Walt Disney World Resort today and Disneyland Resort in the fall, extensions for the series include: print and e-book titles from Disney Publishing; dolls, role-play products, accessories, home décor and apparel from Disney Store and licensees including Hasbro, Jakks Pacific, Franco Manufacturing and Children’s Apparel Network; an EP soundtrack from Walt Disney Records; and a DVD from Disney Studios being released later this year.

“Elena of Avalor” stars Aimee Carrero, Jenna Ortega, Chris Parnell, Yvette Nicole Brown, Carlos Alazraqui, Emiliano Díez, Julia Vera, Christian Lanz, Jillian Rose Reed, Joseph Haro, Jorge Diaz, Keith Ferguson and Joe Nunez. The recurring guest voice cast includes: Constance Marie, Lou Diamond Phillips, Justina Machado, Jaime Camil, Rich Sommer, Tyler Posey, Lucas Grabeel and Echo Kellum. Latin Grammy Award winner Gaby Moreno performs the series’ theme song and will also voice a guest role.

The series was created and is executive produced by Craig Gerber. Silvia Cardenas Olivas is the story editor and will also serve as co-producer on season two. Elliot M. Bour is the supervising director. The series’ cultural advisors are Marcela Davison Avilés, founder of The Chapultepec Group, co-founder of the international Latino arts initiative Camino Arts, and Director of Humanities Programs at the FDR Foundation at Harvard University; and Diane Rodriguez, Associate Artistic Director of Centre Theatre Group and co-founder of the theatre ensemble Latins Anonymous and member of the National Council on the Arts.

Emmy Award winner John Kavanaugh (“Sofia the First”) is the series’ songwriter/music director, Emmy Award-nominated Tony Morales (“Hatfields & McCoys”) is the composer and acclaimed touring musician and Latin music instructor Rene Camacho serves as Latin music consultant. “Elena of Avalor” is a production of Disney Television Animation and carries a TV-Y parental guideline.

Elena of Avalor

We had to wait over a year for We Bare Bears to grace home video, but Elena of Avalor’s first DVD disc is going to happen nearly instantaneously. The first four episodes that have aired will be offered in a DVD package for the young female holiday market.

Elena of Avalor is a spinoff of Disney Junior’s Sophia the First, aimed at a slightly older audience on the Disney Channel. She’s one of those princesses who should be called a queen in all rights yet isn’t one. There’s a Latin twinge to everything, which the show creators took great pains to make authentic.

elena of avalor

If the box art is to be believed, this disc will come with a working light-up model of Elena’s Scepter of Death (well, I’m assuming she can kill people with it). A picture of said scepter, however, isn’t included in Disney’s press release. Surely it wouldn’t fit into this box if it were full-size, so perhaps the DVD box is part of a bigger box? There’s the possibility that it’s really tiny, but then some kid might eat it, like an American and a Kinder Egg, so no.

Elena of Avalor: Ready to Rule will be ready to rock December 6. The full press release from Disney follows.

NYCC 2016: Watch The First Trailer For Tangled: The Series

tangled

Earlier this year Disney announced their 2010 animated feature Tangled would be turned into a TV series. It won’t premiere until next year, but the first trailer was released today….it’s just 15 seconds, but we get all we need to know. Most of it anyway.

Zachary Levi (the Chuck in “Chuck”) and Mandy Moore (the homeless fairy girl from Clone High) will be reprising their movie roles as Flynn Rider and Rapunzel respectively. The series will take place in between the movie and the short “Tangled Ever After,” with Rap and Flynn engaged and having adventures around the world — and guess what’s inexplicably back? The hair.

Disney isn’t telling anyone why Rapunzel’s hair is super-long again, but it looks like it will be addressed in the pilot. The art looks fantastic, using a storybook-style texture without resorting to too many Flash-like shortcuts.

Tangled: The Series will premiere during an unspecified month of 2017. Until then, you’ve got Milo Murphy to keep you contented.

Review: Disney’s”Pete’s Dragon” and “Elena of Avalor: Ready to Rule”

Pete's Dragon 2016 and Elena of Avalor Ready to Rule

Disney’s new Pete’s Dragon remake highlights the small problem we have here at Toonzone that it’s harder to tell what’s an animated movie anymore. The original movie spliced a hand-drawn animated dragon with a live-action cast, which was novel at the time and was never a common movie-making technique. The remake replaces the hand-drawn dragon with one created in CGI, which makes it just like every other effects-driven movie from the past decade or so. The one-degree-of-separation from something with an undeniable animation pedigree is one reason why we opted to review the Pete’s Dragon remake, which is a significant improvement on the original in a number of different ways at the expense of blending in with the increasingly crowded field of movies driven by CGI characters.

The only element retained from the original Pete’s Dragon is the film’s core relationship between a young orphan named Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his companion Elliot, a giant flying dragon who can also turn invisible. This remake wisely dumps everything else about the overly-complex and mostly silly original movie in favor of borrowing a page from Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Pete is now a feral youth who survived a car accident that killed his parents, growing up without parental supervision in the deep forest for six years with the help of Elliot. Pete eventually encounters the kindly forest ranger Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who is engaged to her fiancé, the kindly lumberyard foreman Jack (Wes Bentley). She and Jack’s daughter Natalie (Oona Laurence) quickly bond with Pete while trying to figure out where this strange boy came from. However, Elliot soon emerges from the forest looking for his missing companion, and is soon discovered by Jack’s renegade brother Gavin (Karl Urban) who sees big opportunities for himself in the giant furry green beast.

Pete's DragonI find that all the individual pieces of Pete’s Dragon are well-crafted, with director David Lowrey’s slightly quirky sensibilities keeping things off-kilter enough to avoid cliches. It hits all the right emotional notes without excess mawkishness or saccharine, although I’m not sure it manages to resonate as deeply as it intends to. Oakes Fegley and Bryce Dallas Howard shoulder the dramatic heavy lifting wonderfully well, with the young Mr. Fegley showing tremendous promise in his extremely natural and convincing performance. The movie is extremely spare, with absolutely no unnecessary fat or flab, but this sometimes means characters aren’t able to expand much beyond the simplest archetypes. Only Karl Urban manages to surprise a little bit as his venal Gavin turns out to be not so bad after all. It seems like a little bit of a waste to have an actor as sublime as Robert Redford playing Grace’s father Meacham and then give him so relatively little to do. Meacham encountered Elliot decades earlier, and while it is wonderful to listen to Mr. Redford tell a tall tale (and then recount his meeting much more seriously later in the movie), this is about the limit of what he’s able to do in the movie. The rest of the cast has to make do with even less.

Unfortunately, Elliot may be the weakest element in the movie, though it’s not due to a lack of effort. He is wonderfully realized and animated by the wizards at WETA Workshop, with movements and behaviors that make him seem as familiar as a family pet, but still retaining a fundamentally wild and untamed nature. His vocalizations (mostly provided by actor John Kassir) are suitably otherworldly, which balance nicely with his dynamically expressive facial gestures. The problem is that there are a few too many moments in the movie where he doesn’t quite fit in with the surroundings, breaking the spell the movie works so hard to achieve. I kept having moments where I thought, “That’s an impressive effect,” instead of truly accepting Elliot as a full-fledged character like Rocket and Groot in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It’s odd that I don’t remember thinking similar thoughts while watching the original Pete’s Dragon for the first time a few years ago, even though the special effect of splicing the hand-drawn Elliot into a movie was far more obvious and the assorted trickery to make the actors interact with him was infinitely less sophisticated. In those sorts of movies, the suspension of disbelief is simply the price of admission, and we are soon conditioned to accept the big lie we’re watching. Modern-era CGI cinema trickery has gotten good enough over the years that the standard for acceptance is now much higher, and I’m afraid Elliot doesn’t clear that standard consistently.

Pete's Dragon Pete's Dragon

I must also admit one other reason why I picked up Pete’s Dragon for review was the unique press drop that Disney offered us, wrapping up a digital copy code in an old VHS videotape box (photos of which are provided above). Undeniably, it’s a slightly wasteful indulgence to use this much plastic to package two small cards, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t get a thrill out of holding the box in my hands and cracking open the clamshell as I used to do all those years ago. I wonder if this kind of package could be revived for a special retailer-specific release for a future home video release (especially since Disney’s live-action feature division seems increasingly intent on dedicating the bulk of its release schedule to expensive live-action remakes reliving the studio’s past animated glories, while the actual animated feature division is busy making new stuff).

Pete's DragonThe digital copy of the movie seems to come with the same bonuses as the Blu-ray release of the film. An interesting and informative feature-length commentary is provided with director/co-writer David Lowery joined by co-writer Toby Halbrooks and child stars Oakes Fegley and Oona Laurence. The group manages to balance between behind-the-scenes information (almost none of which is duplicated in the other featurettes) and genial joking around about making the movie. A reel of deleted scenes confirms statements in the commentary that the screenplay was pretty tight and got tighter in post-production; most of the cut footage is unnecessary expansion or explanation from existing scenes. A very short blooper reel is insubstantial, which probably reflects some combination of the cast and crew’s professionalism and the very tight shooting schedule they were on. Three small featurettes focus on different aspects of the production: one is little more than an extended tourism ad for New Zealand (which made a lusher, wilder Pacific Northwest than the U.S.’s actual Pacific Northwest); one looks at the CGI magic that brings Elliot to life; and one shares excerpts from David Lowery’s diary through the 70 days of principal photography. Finally, the digital copy includes two music videos for “Nobody Knows” and “Something Wild,” two of the fine songs that grace the soundtrack.

Pete’s Dragon is cinematic cotton candy: perfectly enjoyable while in-hand, but with surprisingly little staying power afterwards. I liked the movie far more than I thought I would, but realized I had forgotten significant plot details mere hours after finishing it. It also doesn’t help that Elliot never quite achieves the level of cinematic magic that he requires. It’s a good movie that has its heart in the right place, but it can’t quite reach the heights it aspires to. It means little to say that this remake is a significant improvement on the original, since the original was one of many of Disney’s more mediocre efforts from the 70’s, but against so much competition in the marketplace, this remake ultimately finds itself turning nearly as invisible as Elliot.

elena of avalorThe not-so-veiled shot at Disney’s live-action feature department in the review stands in contrast to Disney’s animated feature and TV divisions, which have both doing some of their best work in years. While the features are getting the bulk of the attention, Disney TV Animation has been pushing boundaries and scoring numerous critical successes (even if some shows, like TRON Uprising, Motorcity, and Wander Over Yonder never seemed to gain the audiences I thought they deserved). The new series Elena of Avalor comes with high ambitions and a daunting checklist of requirements: sustaining the Disney Princess franchise with Disney’s first Latina Princess, balancing both the wholesome girl- and merchandise-friendly requirements of the most successful Disney Princesses while avoiding some of the company’s unfortunate race-related pratfalls. If I say that the Elena of Avalor: Ready to Rule DVD seems to be familiar and on the safe side, I’m not sure this is really a criticism since it seems that this is exactly what Disney was aiming for.

Spinning off from Sofia the First (and sharing that show’s creator Craig Gerber), Elena of Avalor begins with a fairy tale of an enchantment that trapped the title character in a magical amulet for 41 years. Freed from the amulet (along with her younger sister Isabel), the physically 16-year-old Elena must take the throne of the kingdom of Avalor as its Crown Princess. The first episode of the series, “First Day of Rule,” establishes that her decisions must be approved by a Grand Council until she comes of age, and then teaches the headstrong Princess that she’s not quite as ready to rule as she thought she was. The overarching theme of misunderstandings gets an appropriately Disney-esque resolution right before Elena selects her Grand Council: her grandparents; her scheming cousin, the Chancellor Esteban; and her new friend Naomi from the docks. Throughout the four episodes on this DVD, Elena is also aided by Mateo, a wizard-in-training and grandson of the former royal wizard Alakazar; Zuzo, a magical spirit fox that only Elena can talk to; and a trio of jaquins, magical flying jaguars, named Sklyar, Migs, and Luna.

Elena of Avalor Ready to RuleThere are relatively few surprises in the episodes on Elena of Avalor: Ready to Rule, other than the way that the entire setup for the show is summed up in a talky exposition sequence right before the first episode starts. It turns out that story, Elena and the Secret of Avalor, wasn’t told until a Sofia/Elena crossover episode that aired several months after Elena of Avalor premiered, which seems backwards but that ship sailed some time ago. Like nearly all of Disney TV Animation’s recent releases, the show maintains a high minimum level of quality throughout, although I find that Elena of Avalor rarely ascends much higher than that minimum level of quality. The one episode which genuinely impressed me the most was “All Heated Up,” with its tale of a misunderstood rock monster whose temper is linked to an active volcano that looms over an Avalor farming village. In addition to being the most unpredictable episode on the disc, it’s also the one with the best obligatory musical number.

Elena of Avalor skews a little older than Sofia the First, with the same gentle spirit getting filtered through slightly more raucous sensibilities. There seems to be a lot more action in Elena, and while I’m not sure whether to credit that to a desire to lure boys or an older audience, I can confirm that it makes Elena a lot easier to sit through for those in either group (or, in my case, both). Elena is winning enough as the heroine of her own story, partially due to a spirited vocal performance by Aimee Carrero and partially due to plots that are structured to give her opportunities for growth and enlightenment. Interestingly, I find Elena of Avalor tones down the element of a threat close to home that Sofia the First seemed to play up more in the hidden machinations of Cedric the magician. Chancellor Esteban resents his younger cousin’s ascension to the throne and engages in power-plays that inevitably end in buffoonery, while Elena herself remains oblivious to his schemes. The last episode on this disc, “Island of Youth,” suggests that Esteban isn’t really this show’s Cedric equivalent, or that at least he’ll reach his rapprochement with his cousin much sooner.

Elena of Avalor Ready to RuleRecent events convince me that a non-trivial portion of the American population will dismiss this show sight-unseen as “too politically correct,” and I waste no effort to dissuade them from their foregone conclusions since too few people who use that term as a pejorative seem willing to listen to contradictory opinion. However, those genuinely concerned with the paucity of non-white representation in the entertainment world, and in the lack of good Latino characters specifically, can rest easier knowing that Elena of Avalor does quite well in filling that niche. While I don’t think Elena of Avalor is quite as successful at crafting its pan-Latin-American kingdom as the recent Moana is at crafting its pan-Polynesian world, I think Elena is also confronting a much more familiar culture to many Americans and has to do it under different restrictions and far more visible scrutiny. I think it’s successful enough, and initial concerns from assorted Latino groups seem to have abated in the face of the actual show. If anything, I had a slightly raised eyebrow at the Asian-inspired kingdom of Satu in the second episode, “Model Sister,” but my initial concerns were nicely eased by the sly performance by George Takei as the King of Satu and by the way the episode hinges on some fundamental misunderstandings.

The Elena of Avalor: Ready to Rule DVD is extremely bare bones, even for a Disney TV series aimed at younger viewers. The disc contains exactly four episodes of the TV show and no bonus features other than trailers, which makes it a very, very slim home video offering that barely clears 90 minutes. The initial release includes a small “Elena Projection Scepter,” a 4-inch long miniature flashlight that projects a disappointingly small picture of Elena on a wall; I expect even this meager offering will vanish in later pressings of the disc.

Elena of Avalor isn’t a bad show by any means, and does exactly what it sets out to do. However, I am heartened by its mere existence, and in the way the show provides numerous positive role models for Latino-American kids both in the characters and the actors voicing them. Perhaps Elena will get more satisfying subsequent home video releases to balance out this disappointingly short first DVD.

The Tangled Series Will Debut With A TV Movie

$

In a few weeks the Disney Channel will begin running Tangled: The Series, a sequel serial to the 2010 feature film and a prequel to the short that followed it. In this series Rapunzel and Flynn aren’t married yet, perhaps because they’re dealing with some new problems…

One of the most obvious will be made clear in the premise for Tangled: Before Ever After, the TV movie that launches the series. Rapunzel is famous for her extremely long hair — hair she lost at the end of the movie. Now, for whatever reason, it’s back. And this time, she can’t even cut it — it’s become indestructible!

Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi are back as Rapunzel and Flynn, and we hear they even got Alan Menken to write a few new songs. The show also employs a pretty unique animation style. It’s not the traditional one-frame-at-a-time, but it looks like it took more effort than Flash. Especially whenever they have to animate all that hair.

There still isn’t an exact date for the premiere of Tangled: The Series, but since they say for certain Before Ever After will run in March, we would bet on the show starting soon after.

Woo-ooo! Our First Big Look At The New DuckTales

Disney’s animation department has been working on a new version of the classic Ducktales TV show for about two years now, and it’s almost ready to broadcast. A minute-and-a-half-long trailer was released today. It’s supposed to air during the Tangled: The Series premiere, but thanks to the miracle of Internet video, you can watch it now.

One thing you need to understand before you watch this: this isn’t the original show. 1987 was a long time ago and nobody makes 1987-style cartoons anymore. From the minute and a half we get, it feels more like Gravity Falls if there were three Dippers and they were all birds. Perhaps the most controversial thing about this is that Huey, Dewey and Louie don’t sound duck-like enough….they are halfway between their original voices and their “radical” revamped voices from “Quack Pack.”

David Tennant as Scrooge, however? Freakin’ awesome.

Unfortunately, I’m expecting a crowd that will reject this immediately and start making “Why The New DuckTales Is The Worst Cartoon Of All Time” videos on YouTube. There’s been a lot of that going around. If you’re open-minded, however, start watching.

Disney is out there making DuckTales, and they’re not going to stop: the show was renewed for a second season today. It premieres this summer; exact airdate TBD.

The network has also ordered a season four pickup for Disney TVA’s Annie Award-nominated “Star vs. The Forces of Evil” from creator Daron Nefcy.

Coleman said, “‘Amphibia’ and ‘The Owl House’ are both set in wildly imaginative worlds and share hallmarks of great Disney storytelling, including fantastical elements and memorable characters. Matt and Dana each bring a unique sensibility to their shows unlike anything else on TV right now.”

Amphibia” is a comedy series that chronicles the adventures of 13-year-old, self-centered Anne Boonchuy who is magically transported to the fictitious world of Amphibia, a rural marshland full of frog-people. With the help of an excitable young frog named Sprig, Anne will transform into a hero and discover the first true friendship of her life. Braly serves as executive producer.

Executive-produced by Terrace, “The Owl House” is a horror-comedy series that follows Luz, a self-assured teenage human girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm where she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda’s apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting.

The fourth season of “Star vs. The Forces of Evil” will follow teen princess from another dimension Star Butterfly (voiced by Eden Sher) and her best friend Marco Diaz (voiced by Adam McArthur) as they continue their adventures in Mewni and explore new dimensions. However, as things change in the royal palace Star will soon learn that running the kingdom is far more complicated than she once thought. Nefcy serves as executive producer. In its third season, “Star vs. The Forces of Evil” ranks as Disney XD’s #1 series in Kids 6-11 and Kids 9-14. The hardcover book “Star vs. the Forces of Evil: The Magic Book of Spells,” created by Disney Press, will be released in July 2018.

Animation Abroad – BES Animation’s Kitty Is Not A Cat

In 2009, The Amazing World Of Gumball was first announced. I fell in love with the show right away and I followed its development as closely as I could, regularly doing numerous searches online for any scrap of information about it. When it premiered in 2011, I was not disappointed, and the show went on to win numerous awards and is now in the middle of its sixth season. It is rare for an animated program to make that impression on me and I do not make such comparisons lightly, but BES Animation’s Kitty Is Not A Cat is one of the most delightful cartoons that I have ever seen. Ever since I learned of it back in 2016, I genuinely believed that it would be something special, and no animated program since Gumball has made me feel that way.

Kitty Is Not A Cat is about an imaginative little girl who wishes to become a cat and sees no reason why she can’t become one. When she arrives at the doorstep of an abandoned mansion where a group of cats live, she quickly warms their hearts and they welcome her into their family. While some of the younger cats are on-board with her desire to be a cat, the “responsible” cats of the house believe it is their duty to teach the little girl – named Kitty, due to the collar on her cat pajamas – how to be human. Of course, most of the cats know very little about how to be human, which paves the way for adorably amusing antics.

One unique thing about the show is that the main character, Kitty, doesn’t speak. Because she wishes to be a cat, she only meows and hisses like a proper cat, so it’s up to the large supporting cast of cats to progress the plots. One look at the characters page on the cartoon’s website shows just how many cats there are, and each one of them has a fun personality and their own unique dynamic with Kitty; Last Chance, a danger prone cat voiced by Rove McManus, is my personal favorite. The cats also have a love for music and music is an important part of the show, which really makes it stand out.

Kitty Is Not A Cat premiered in Italy last month on DeA Kids, and has been airing on Disney Channels throughout Europe. It premieres in its home country of Australia on April 20th, on 7Two. Jetpack Distribution acquired the international distribution rights to the show outside of Asia, so hopefully they can find Kitty a home in the United States, as I firmly believe it can be a wildly successful show if given the chance. With cartoons like this coming out of Australia, international animation can add another feather to its cap, and I’m looking forward to seeing what BES Animation does next. The Jan & Rai Show looks particularly interesting, but that’s an article for another time.

Star Wars Resistance

STAR WARS RESISTANCE, A HIGH-FLYING ANIME-INSPIRED SERIES THAT EXPLORES AN UNCHARTED TIMEFRAME PRIOR TO THE EVENTS OF THE FORCE AWAKENS, ORDERED BY DISNEY CHANNELS

Production has begun on “Star Wars Resistance,” an exciting new animated adventure series about Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order. It will premiere this fall on Disney Channel in the U.S. and, thereafter, on Disney XD and around the world.

Featuring the high-flying adventure that audiences of all ages have come to expect from Star Wars, “Star Wars Resistance” will feature the beloved droid BB-8 alongside ace pilots, colorful new characters and appearances by fan favorites, including Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, voiced by actors Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, respectively.

The series was created by renowned Lucasfilm Animation veteran Dave Filoni (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels”); executive-produced by Athena Portillo (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels”), Justin Ridge (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels”) and Brandon Auman (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”); and art-directed by Amy Beth Christenson (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels”).

“The idea for ‘Star Wars Resistance’ came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, Programming and general manager, Disney XD, said, “Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. ‘Star Wars Resistance’ will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor and both new and familiar characters.”

The voice cast also includes Christopher Sean (“Days of Our Lives”), Suzie McGrath (“East Enders”), Scott Lawrence (“Legion”), Myrna Velasco (“Elena of Avalor”), Josh Brener (“Silicon Valley”), Donald Faison (“Scrubs”), Bobby Moynihan (“DuckTales”), Jim Rash (“Community”) and Rachel Butera (“Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time”).

Star Wars Resistance Coming To Disney Channel This Fall

star wars resistance

Benn wondering what’s going to replace Star Wars Rebels now that the four-season tale is over? We got our answer today…what’s different about Star Wars Resistance, and what’s similar?

As many fans anticipated, Disney and Lucasfilm are following up their series set in the original trilogy with a series set in the time period of the new films. Specifically the show takes place shortly before The Force Awakens, with Poe Dameron and BB-8 among the main cast. Captain Phasma has also been mentioned, and both characters will be voiced by their movie actors (Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie). But the main focus will be around Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited by General Organa to spy on the First Order.

So besides a new trilogy to mine ideas from, what was the motive? ”The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” says Filoni.

Star Wars Resistance will premiere on the Disney Channel this fall, with repeats appearing on Disney XD.

BES Animation Launches “Kitty Is Not A Cat” YouTube Channel

After a successful premiere on 7Two in Australia, in addition to several Disney Channel networks throughout Africa and Europe, BES Animation has launched a YouTube channel for Kitty Is Not A Cat.  I’ve had my eye on this series for quite a while and even wrote about how I thought it would be something special.  Having had the chance to watch a few episodes, I firmly believe that it is special.  Kitty is a delightfully charming cartoon that stands out from its peers.  Its premise is refreshingly original and its varied cast of colorful and comedic cats is sure to entertain both boys and girls.  The writing is sharp and there are a lot of funny gags, but as the cats strive to be positive role-models for Kitty and help her grow as a human, the show promotes positive behaviors while still being entertaining.  BES Animation currently has ten episodes uploaded onto their YouTube channel, and whether you have kids or not, I strongly recommend that you subscribe to it.  Their YouTube channel can be found here, and the episodes can be watched in most countries.  If you live in Australia, every episode can currently be watched on 7Plus.  I am looking forward to watching more episodes of Kitty Is Not A Cat and I hope to have a review written in short order, but I am confident others will find it as delightful as I have.

Woo-ooo! Our First Big Look At The New DuckTales

$
