Big City Greens Renewed For Third Season

Within the last few years, Disney’s cable TV output has been nothing short of outstanding. Gravity Falls kicked off a renaissance that so far has brought us The Owl House, the DuckTales reboot, Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil, Amphibia, and Big City Greens. But with the attention of entertainment companies increasingly focused on streaming, and much of Disney+’s content being based on remakes of pre-existing movies and shows…how long can the current streak of brilliance last?

For now, it looks like we’re safe. Disney announced a renewal for Big City Greens this week, assuring we’ll get further adventures of the yellow bumpkins well into 2022. The series revolves around the Beverly Hillbillies-like antics of Cricket Green and his deeply rural family as they move to the big city and cause one ruckus after another.

Big City Greens was created by Chris and Shane Houghton, based on their childhood growing up in the tiny community of St. Johns, MI. The show features the voices of one of those Haughtons as Cricket (Chris), Artemis Pebdani as Gramma Alice, Marieve Herington as Cricket’s sister Tilly Green, and Bob Joles as Cricket’s father Bill Green.

“We are excited to be deepening our relationship with Disney,” Chris and Shane Houghton said in a PR statement. “They have been very supportive of us and our crazy ideas, and we are looking forward to continuing to grow Big City Greens as well as develop new and exciting projects together.” Adds Meredith Roberts of Disney Channel, “Chris and Shane have a wonderfully unique vision for characters and stories with both humor and heart, and we’re especially pleased to continue working with them on more Big City Greens and other creative ventures.”

Wait, what other ventures? Is there a second series from the Houghtons on the way? Maaaaaaaybe…the deal they just closed with Disney not only guarantees a third season for Big City Greens, but signs them on to produce new original shows for Disney’s cable and streaming channels. So even after this show is done (nothing lives past Season 3 on Disney Channel), that’s far from the end.
